Project Information
At Watermouth Castle’s Hobbledown Bay, we were commissioned to transform a tired and dated play area into a vibrant, storybook adventure destination. The brief was to create something that would excite visitors of all ages, increase dwell time, and reflect the magical character of the wider attraction. Our response was to design and build a timber play village nestled into the hillside, with whimsical towers, pitched and conical roofs, and elevated walkways. By combining imaginative architecture with natural landscaping, we delivered a play space that feels both immersive and enduring—perfectly suited to the character of the castle grounds.
The new scheme layers high-energy, challenging play for older children with gentler, imaginative opportunities for younger ones. Elevated towers and bridges provide thrilling exploration routes, while enclosed slides, crawl tunnels, and balance features encourage physical confidence and problem-solving. At ground level, a toddler-friendly hamlet with role-play cottages and an interactive sensory wall adds opportunities for discovery and cooperative play. Quiet nooks, sheltered corners, and natural planting ensure that the space offers both high-adventure moments and calm retreats, creating an environment where every child can find their own way to play.
Durability and safety were key considerations, with all elements built from timber, surfaced with natural materials, and installed to the latest UK play standards. Clear sightlines and zoned play areas support supervision, while robust detailing ensures longevity and low maintenance. The finished result is a play environment that not only captures the imagination but also provides lasting value for both the client and their visitors. Hobbledown Bay is now a standout attraction that delights families, strengthens the venue’s identity, and creates a memorable reason to return time and again.
